Update 06.09.2016 : Anticor civil party in the Bygmalion case (Chalouette)

Nicolas Sarkozy 05 09 2016

The prosecution requested the referral to correctional 14 indicted in the Bygmalion case, including former President Nicolas Sarkozy, for the offense of illegal financing of his presidential campaign in 2012, sources close to the investigation told AFP.

After the prosecution's requisitions, it is up to the investigating judges to decide whether or not to dismiss the indicted, or whether to dismiss the case. They have in theory a period of one month. The order of the judges could therefore fall just before the primary of the right, scheduled for November 20 and 27, and to which the former head of state is a candidate.

Suspected false invoices

The investigation originally focused on alleged false invoices issued for an amount of 18 million euros by the company Bygmalion to cover overruns of the 2012 campaign budget. It was widened in October to other expenses of the former UMP, now renamed Les Républicains, for 13,5 million euros.

The head of illegal election campaign financing is liable to a fine of 3750 euros and one year in prison.
