Addictions to screens and video games: parents call for help

We've been talking about it on our pages for a few years, because I've been facing this problem for more than 10 years with my children, even if the two don't have the same degree of addiction, it's still a big worry, and I'm in no position to teach them a lesson, since I too spend a lot of time on my computer, but I still try to assume my role as a father. Also, if you are like me, quite helpless with this concern, I have a workaround that may be useful to you., knowing that if you give them free rein, they will go to bed at 4 a.m. and wake up at 2 p.m. or worse. I tested several solutions which all failed except the last one. You can always install parental controls on your kid's PC, but your kiddos will spend their lives trying every technical trick they know to get around it (which can be just as dangerous to your network if you download malware ). However, I identified parental control software which (if you set it up correctly) is normally foolproof, but again you don't know how long it will last over time, so I found another solution which is, hardware. We recently had to change the router (internet box), and in the one I bought there is an "access strategy" tab which allows you to define by Mac address (the physical address of the network interface of each device, PC, MAC, phone or tablet) specific hours of Internet access, for the week and the weekend, so you can, like me, block all communications on your children's network cards (PC and interface Telephone or tablet Wifi), for example from midnight to 7 a.m. on weekdays and from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. on weekends, you can also ban certain internet addresses (up to eight) such as large pornography sites or certain online games. The router I use is the entry-level Linksys brand, it is a WIFI ADSL and VDSL modem router. type X6200, but there are plenty of other models in the Linksys brand (more expensive) but with even more advanced parental control… (The menus are in French). Know that once you have defined the “rules” the children will comply with them without too much difficulty, there too they need a “framework” from which they cannot overflow. However, be careful with GSM 4G packages, don't think that your child doesn't know how to use it..., the more addicted of the two (the oldest) is not entitled to it, however, I exceptionally lend him mine for big downloads.

Don't forget also to try to understand their addiction, you have excellent documentaries on the world of video games in "Additional information" under this article, because things are not entirely good or entirely bad, once again you have to try to understand things, and go find out maybe that one day like me, you will play in network with your children ... And you will enjoy it, and incidentally also a big jail...; )))))) But these are still fun activities that you will do « together... »

Children Screens 20 06 2018
How to become a parent 2.0? Huge question... Anne Van der Stegen/Divergence

SPECIAL REPORT - Telephones, tablets, computers: their omnipresence in our daily lives raises the question of their use, in particular by children, who devote more and more time to them. What are the threats? How to overcome them? Le Figaro investigated.

A Friday evening in June, in Roissy-en-France. A few hundred parents multiply the questions during an awareness session organized by this small town in Val-d'Oise. It is a “dismaying” news item that prompted the town hall to organize this meeting. At the start of the school year, porn videos featuring a schoolgirl circulated in a 3rd grade class. In primary school, it was children aged 9 to 11 who had access to porn on smartphones. They then filmed themselves reproducing some of these scenes and showed them to their comrades... The example is edifying, but hopelessly banal. Everywhere in France, adults are lost. How to become a parent 2.0? Agnès Leclair went to meet of these town halls or companies seeking to help them.

The digital issue is a major subject for the school. Should we completely deprive children of screens or should these new technologies be adapted to student learning? Between the absence of teacher training and several unsuitable "digital plans", the Ministry of National Education, which has just obtained a ban on the use of laptops at school, has not really settled the question.
