Crashdebug.fr is pleased to announce that the ACTA bill has just been rejected by the Europarliament. Thank you to those who (like me) have called their MEP, and a big congratulations to the "4 guys in a garage", alias La Quadrature du Net, for their extreme counter-lobbying (among other things on site). Now is the time to think about support them... If you are wondering (legitimately) who are the 39 cretins (21 just for France!) who voted for, I leave you the surprise... (Which will not really be one...)
Strasbourg, 4 July 2012 – The European Parliament rejected ACTA by a large majority, destroying it permanently. This rejection constitutes a major victory for the multitude of connected citizens and organizations who have worked hard for several years, but also a hope of global magnitude for a better democracy. On the ruins of ACTA, we must now build a positive copyright reform, which will have to take into account our rights rather than fight them. The victory against ACTA must sound like a warning to legislators: fundamental freedoms and the free and open Internet must prevail over private interests.
Citizens of the Internet and around the world have won! By 478 votes to 39 in the final vote, Members of the European Parliament killed ACTA once and for all. Together, connected through a decentralized communication network, we defeated this dangerous treaty, negotiated in secret by a club of private interests and dogmatic officials. The battle against ACTA has proven how crucial the networked public sphere has become for the future of our societies and our democracies.
Philippe Aigrain, co-founder and strategic advisor of La Quadrature du Net, says: “The European institutions must recognize that the alliance between citizens, civil society organizations and the European Parliament is the foundation of a new democratic era in Europe. European copyright policies must now be developed with the participation of citizens”.
La Quadrature du Net would like to warmly thank and congratulate all the citizens, organizations and networks who worked collectively for this victory! Let's celebrate it with dignity and try to learn from this success, in order to be even stronger in the next battles!
“Beyond ACTA, we must put an end to the repressive escalation imposing devices that undermine the Internet and fundamental freedoms. Citizens must demand a positive copyright reform that will encourage online cultural practices, such as sharing and remixing, rather than suppressing them. The victory against ACTA must mark the beginning of a new era in which public decision-makers put freedoms and the free Internet – our common good – before private interests” concludes Jérémie Zimmermann, spokesperson for the civic organization.
