Free trade agreements: rally in Strasbourg against the Ceta vote

Even though TAFFETA is in bad shape with the election of Donald Trump, his twin ... CETA (much less known than the Transatlantic Treaty) is everything as dangerous for European citizens.

Stop Ceta 11 02 2017

The European Parliament is due to vote on February 15 on the draft free trade agreement between the European Union and Canada (Ceta). If ratified, it will enter into provisional application from 1er next March. Since 2013, the Stop Tafta-Ceta campaign has collected nearly four million signatures from Europeans asking the Commission and the Member States to abandon these treaties. There are many concerns: jobs, food quality, pursuit of States by multinationals... Basta! relays the call for citizen mobilization in Strasbourg on 14 and 15 February.

For several years, in Europe as in Canada, millions of people have been asking the European Commission, European and national governments and legislators to abandon the conclusion and application of Ceta. More than 2100 local and regional governments in Europe have expressed their fear of such a treaty for territories and communities.

On both sides of the Atlantic, citizens' movements, associations for the defense of human rights and the environment, trade unions, farmers' organisations, consumer groups... have demonstrated the risks of the treaty for populations and for the planet. .

Ceta is the result of negotiations conducted in the most total opacity, under pressure from industrial and financial interest groups. It will give corporations the power to sue governments and challenge the legitimate policies they adopt to protect the rights of people and the planet. It will facilitate investment in the extraction and transport of fossil fuels harmful to the climate and biodiversity. It goes against the Paris Agreement signed in December 2015 to fight against climate change.

Ceta drastically limits the ability of governments to create, develop and regulate public services. Ceta endangers the stability of our economies by making our countries more vulnerable to financial crises through the liberalization of markets and the drastic limitation of means to curb future crises. CETA's rules on regulatory cooperation will strengthen the influence of lobbies on the development of public policies, potentially undermining the policies of general interest that we need.

On both sides of the Atlantic, Ceta would put farmers under competitive pressure and threaten their livelihoods, with no substantial gain for consumers; it would harm local agriculture; would threaten the high standards of food production and processing and would undermine efforts to develop sustainable agriculture that respects the environment.

Under the Ceta regime, precautionary measures to protect consumers, public health and the environment could be challenged on the grounds that they are too restrictive and lack scientific justification. A survey of the Canadian press revealed a few days ago the place of the country as a "preferred destination" for tax evasion - signing Ceta would thus amount to facilitating tax avoidance for European multinationals, while the argument the lack of means justifies the most regressive decisions.

All these concerns have remained a dead letter, even though the mobilization does not weaken — more than 100 actions were organized throughout Europe on January 21, from Finland to Portugal. We are now in the home straight, the European Parliament is preparing to ratify the treaty on February 15: 751 MEPs will have to choose between the profits of a few and the future of peoples and our planet.

On this occasion, hundreds of citizens from all over Europe will meet in Strasbourg for two days of mobilization during which they will recall that another trade, at the service of peoples and the planet, is possible! The French campaign Stop Tafta-Ceta, however, recalls its position with regard to the extreme right. It has chosen not to engage in any contact or dialogue with political groups embodying forms of nationalist and xenophobic populism that do not correspond to the values shared by its members.

Against the multinationals treaty, for our jobs, for our rights, for our health, for our environment, for social and climate justice, together, let's meet in Strasbourg on February 14 and 15 to make our voices heard against Ceta!
