Tehran gives 60 days to save the Vienna agreement signed a year ago.

Tehran has decided to stop applying "some" of "its commitments" made under the 2015 Iranian nuclear agreement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday May 8.

In short: Iran has decided to stop limiting its reserves of heavy water and enriched uranium as it had committed to under the 2015 international agreement limiting its nuclear program. Iran will stop selling its enriched uranium and heavy water to other countries.

The decision was officially notified to the ambassadors of the countries still party to this agreement (Germany, China, France, Great Britain and Russia) after the withdrawal of the United States from this pact exactly one year ago, indicates the ministry.

This decision comes a year to the day after Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of the United States from the 2015 agreement and the gradual reinstatement of US economic sanctions against Tehran.

"The measures taken by the United States, in particular for a year but also before [...] their withdrawal [from the agreement] were clearly intended to cause a break in the application" of this agreement, declared Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif visiting Moscow. Iran has shown "patience" so far, he added. Nevertheless, Zarif said, "Iran will not withdraw" from this agreement, and the decision to suspend measures corresponds to a "right" left to the parties to the agreement in the event of defaults by another party.

France had warned Tehran on Tuesday against such a decision, stressing that breaches of the 2015 compromise would lead to European sanctions. On Monday, the Iranian news agency IRIB reported that Iran would resume part of its nuclear activities interrupted since the signing of the agreement.

In fact, in the wake of this announcement of suspension, President Hassan Rouhani gave 60 days to the other signatories to implement their promises to protect the banking and oil sectors against sanctions from Washington. He added that in the absence of results after 60 days, Tehran would renege on other commitments and increase its level of enriched uranium.

Hassan Rohani warned against the "firm response" of the Islamic Republic if the Security Council of the United Nations was seized again on the Iranian nuclear file. He said he was ready for negotiations.

This announcement comes in a climate of heightened tensions between Iran and the United States, which announced Tuesday the dispatch of B-52 bombers to the Gulf.
