Atlantico: The holidays have started for the children, but unfortunately not all parents can take a long holiday. How to occupy your children when you work?
Nathalie Guellier: Already, with regard to separated or divorced parents, it should be known that, generally, the child spends half of the long summer holidays with each of the parents, which makes, roughly speaking, one month "only" to occupy . Very often, the parent has modeled his vacation on the period when he has custody of his children, so this reduces the number of weeks when the child must be occupied.
But, there are still the sure values: the outdoor center of the municipality or the city, summer camps or teenage camps, language courses, sports stays (horse riding, kayaking, etc.), depending on the age, and then, of course, the family with, first of all, the grandparents, but also uncles and aunts or friends if they have children of the same age.
What are the preferred solutions? For what ?
It is important to take into account the desires of the child or teenager, their interests : no need to ruin yourself for a synchronized swimming course when your daughter doesn't like the pool! It is above all a vacation, they also have the right to have fun.
Then, it is obviously the wallet of each family which will guide the solution: sending the children to a camp or any internship can quickly become expensive, if the family does not benefit from any help.
And why not just go camping for a weekend, in your region, near a lake or some park: it's not the change of scenery that will count but the experience of family camping!
What are the practical details to look at to choose the right colony / center? Any tips for children to have the best possible holiday?
First, it is necessary to check that the structure is approved and declared to the Departmental Directorate for Social Cohesion of the department where the organization has its head office. Of course, this involves a director and qualified instructors.
Beyond the cost of the camp or holiday center, it is necessary to check that this price is in line with the services offered. I would advise favoring structures with a small workforce (around a hundred), which facilitates integration.
The organizations that cover the whole of France (UCPA, UFCV, etc.) offer serious guarantees, due to their seniority and their specialization acquired over the years.
What are the solutions for families with low means?
It is common for the works council to offer partial payment for the leisure and vacation stays of employees' children.. The very large works councils even have their own holiday centers (EDF in particular).
The town halls also offer activities that will be priced according to the family quotient, which allows everyone to pay according to their possibilities. In the same way, social tourism organizations also apply prices according to family situation and income: their subjects are referred to as "good Vacaf" because they are often labeled Vacaf, that is to say that the Caf (family allowance funds) contribute financially to the stay of the children via these associations.
