The summer begins and the holidays too: the children will be able to enjoy and rest after their school year. But be careful, we must not forget the holiday homework. In the first episode of our series "How to occupy your children on vacation", some advice to make your children work in a good mood.

Atlantic: We begin the two summer months, when the children have just finished their school year. How long should I wait before starting to work again? What is the incompressible time to allow children to fully enjoy their vacation?
Monique de Kermadec: Of course, you need a rest period. I don't know if parents should measure it to the nearest day, but let's say that a good fortnight seems to me to be the very basis of a break with the rhythm of the school year.. Furthermore, holiday work can only be considered taking into account the school year. If the results during this one were weak and the passage acquired narrowly, the work is absolutely fundamental. If the school year has been positive, the work does not need to be so important, and can above all be an opportunity to consolidate certain learning so that there is no loss during the summer.
What are the best methods for making children work during the holidays: holiday notebooks? Read books ? Do cultural outings? Take advantage of every opportunity to teach them new things?
The purely academic work must essentially be targeted on the subjects which posed problems during the year. The idea of a general work, via a vacation notebook for example, often seems to me not to meet this objective.. For the rest, we can really skim over a few notions, but above all we must not redo the whole year.
And indeed, learning does not necessarily have to be strictly formal. The most important thing is first to have the child's support. It is therefore also necessary to see with him what is the best way, but also the best time, to carry out the work. If, for example, the child goes out all day, when he comes back in the evening, it will obviously be impossible to do this work. It is therefore necessary to consider either in the morning or after lunch, during the hottest hours.
How is holiday homework different from year-round?
It differs because during the time, which must remain reasonable, where the child will work, he will of course have to acquire the notions but also and above all the working methods. Sometimes, some students are of a good level but have low marks because they do not know how to effectively restore their knowledge. The work of the holidays must be based on this to prepare well for the next school year and be immediately effective..
We also note that during the holidays, parents try to anticipate the following year by having their children do part of the program for a given subject. There may be too much pressure that is exerted all the time. A child can of course be familiarized in a pleasant way with certain concepts, but wanting to make an excellent student do a whole program is to create year-round tensions and a fear of failure in the student. So you have to be careful.
Should we impose constraints during the holidays on our children? How much time should be given to homework during the summer period?
The constraints to be imposed are difficult to determine because parents also do not want to have any during their holidays. The holidays remain a time of sharing in the family and you have to know how not to spoil it with schoolwork. It must therefore be done at a time when the child and the family are not constantly on the move. You also have to impose a certain regularity on your schedules, because it's very difficult to do your homework one day at 7 a.m. and the next day at 15 p.m., on the beach, because you didn't have time in the morning. . But I insist: you have to stick to a really limited time for the child to be receptive, and target what is necessary.
Is school work during the holidays necessary to fully understand the start of the new school year? For what ?
We all long for holidays where we did absolutely nothing, but if we do nothing for two months or two and a half months, there is a risk of some loss. There are students, in general those who have the best opportunities to study, will lose almost nothing, but others can easily a third of what they were able to learn the previous year. It must be understood that we sometimes have children who pass with extreme accuracy in the upper class when they did not have the level at all. Parents can indeed appeal school decisions, they can even change their child's school... So we have young people who arrive in a class of which they have absolutely no knowledge. These must absolutely work because otherwise the adults – and they will be fully responsible for this – send him to the firing squad, because he will not have the means to meet the new demands. A good student can indeed content himself with quickly re-reading his lessons from the previous year before the start of the school year. Everything will depend on the previous year.
