Ammonium perchlorate in water catchment areas in Bordeaux

BORDEAUX - Significant levels of ammonium perchlorate were discovered at the beginning of July in drinking water catchment sources in the Bordeaux Urban Community (CUB), leading to the cessation of certain pumping operations to ensure perfectly healthy water distribution , we learned Tuesday from elected officials.

According to elected environmentalists (EELV) from Gironde, who revealed this information, rates of up to 30 micrograms per liter were recorded in drinking water catchment areas located north of the Safran SME industrial site, ex-SNPE Energetic Materials (SME), located in the suburbs of Bordeaux and which uses ammonium perchlorate for the propulsion of missiles.

The CUB, which manages the water service in delegation with the Lyonnaise des eaux, indicated that it had carried out the confinement of these catchment sites, so as not to send this water into the distribution network, and guaranteed to the population levels not exceeding 4 micrograms per liter.

The water is perfectly drinkable throughout the agglomeration and, as long as the rates are not satisfactory, we are reorganizing the distribution of water with larger catchments in other areas, we added. .

An emergency meeting was held on July 1 in the Gironde prefecture and the Local Water Commission (CLE), bringing together elected officials and associations, was informed of these abnormally high rates on July 11. An exceptional meeting of the CLE is scheduled for Thursday.

The Ministry of Health is soon to set permissible thresholds for ammonium perchlorate in water. According to the elected EELV of Gironde, this product has a direct impact on health because it deteriorates the thyroid in an irreversible way.

These elected officials intend to ask the president of the CUB to file a complaint because, according to them, there has been an error or negligence.

Ammonium perchlorate and other products have been pouring into the waters for years. We want to put the debate in the public square and ask the prefect for expertise on all the military industrial sites in the Gironde, indicated Gérard Chausset, president of the EELV group of the CUB.

The State had validated in early April the takeover of SME by the aeronautics and defense group Safran.
