The DOWINO studio launches “A Blind Legend”, an audio-game for smartphones intended for the blind. The player embodies Edward Blake, a knight with gouged eyes who must save his sweetheart. Put on a helmet and let yourself be guided.
Edward Blake must save his Lady Caroline from the mighty Thork. To reach it, despite his gouged eyes, the knight must find his bearings thanks to the sounds that surround him and the voices that advise him. This immersive sound game is the result of the work of the Lyon studio DOWINO : it is still being financed on Ulule.
No need to have your eyes riveted on the screen to play: the player uses his phone as a joystick only and navigates through the universes thanks to the sounds. “A Blind Legend” uses binaural sound technology, a kind of 3D sound. “It seems to hear sounds coming from above or from the sides” explains Pierre-Alain Gagne, co-founder of DOWINO at the Tribune. Several parameters, such as time delays from ear to ear or differences in sound level, combine to allow the brain to locate the sound source in space.
"A Blind Legend" was developed with the support of the Federation of the Blind of France. “We regularly test elements of the game with blind people in order to get their opinion”, confides Pierre-Alain Gagne to street press. But gambling isn't just for the blind. Psychics can also experience blindness to immerse themselves in an elaborate story. "It's not the first smartphone video game for the blind, but it's the first that leaves so much room for a developed scenario and action" assures the co-founder. “A Blind Legend” will be free to download.
