Among young independents, 84,3% share their accommodation with at least two roommates. "The emancipation of young people in our country remains a utopian idea", writes the CJE. 25,2% of young women would be independent, against 16,4% of young men.

The report explains that the biggest part of the problem is the situation in the real estate market, combined with the lack of available jobs. The study found that young people would need to have 95,4% higher incomes to be able to buy their own home.

Unemployment

The unemployment rate in Spain fluctuates around the 50% since the economic crisis of 2008, although it rose to 45% in January. Spain is the second EU country with the highest unemployment rate after Greece, according to Eurostat. “Behind these numbers lies the reality: the impossibility of self-care, which puts a large portion of young people at risk of poverty,” the report says, adding that politicians should enact laws guaranteeing decent jobs.
