In France, everything is definitely going for the best… for the rich! As noted by the economic newspaper Bloomberg monday 1er July, the 14 French billionaires among the 500 richest on the planet grew richer by 78 billion dollars – net – in the first half of 2019, with a growth rate of 34,6%: a record rate of enrichment among the countries with more than two billionaires.

While the yellow vests occupied the roundabouts, the ultra-rich French people amassed wealth at twice the rate of their Chinese (17%) and American (15%) counterparts. French billionaires are ahead of those in Thailand (+32,7%), Singapore (30%) and Japan (24%).

Among this 1% of the 1%, it is still the first three French fortunes whose portfolio has thickened the most, according to index of Bloomberg : driven by strong demand for luxury goods in China, Bernard Arnault (LVMH, 3e world fortune), Françoise Bettencourt Meyers (L'Oréal, 9e world fortune) and François Pinault (Kering, 23e world fortune) alone have earned 53 billion dollars since the 1er January.

Five French in the top ten

The largest French fortunes are in insolent health: among the ten billionaires who have earned the most since the start of the year, five are French. Appear in this quintet, in addition to the three Croesus already mentioned, the brothers Alain and Gérard Wertheimer (31e and 32e world fortunes), at the head of the Chanel group.

For this first half, a special mention must also be awarded to Bernard Arnault who has piled up 32,4 billion dollars in earnings since the beginning of the year. It is the strong growth of the LVMH share (+45% this year), which has allowed the estimated fortune of Bernard Arnault to reach such a level. In 2018, the LVMH group increased its sales by 10% worldwide, totaling 46,8 billion euros. With 101 billion dollars in his personal accounts, Bernard Arnault thus enters the very closed club of men whose personal fortune exceeds 100 billion dollars, alongside the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates (107 billion personal fortune), and of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, the world's richest man with $120 billion in the bank.
