Nearly 700 French minors are in Syria today, and their return to France is "just a matter of time", said today the sub-prefect responsible for coordinating actions against radicalization in France.
"Since last September, 24 minors have returned from Syria," said Sylvie Especier, head of the national coordination and support unit for territorial action within the Interministerial Committee for the Prevention of Delinquency and radicalization (CIPDR). "We estimate that there are several hundred left in the area, not far from 700 in total, more than half of whom are under 5 years old and a third were born there. They will return to France, it's just a question of time", she developed, during a meeting in Nice of the network "Radicalisation awareness network".

Once they arrive on French soil, these minors, aged from a few months to 16 years old according to the authorities, are taken care of within the framework of social assistance for children (ASE). Minors can be educated, but "it is not always possible right away", she admits: "In any case, this is the objective that we are pursuing: to allow these children to find a life as a child For the older ones, it's the question of training that arises." Their parents being placed in police custody upon their arrival in France, the minors are separated from their families. "To cope with these returns in the coming months, we are thinking about new forms of reception. For example, we are considering, but it is still only at the stage of reflection, the creation of mother- children, when it comes to infants."
"You don't have to be candid either. Some of these children, we see for example on videos where they execute hostages, cannot be placed in foster families", nuance Mme Species. Children over the age of 13 can also be prosecuted.
