You probably know this, but Scandinavia is regularly cited as one of the most optimized places to live. Happier, more tranquility and less stress, here are the three most interesting elements that Scandinavia offers compared to our European societies. Denmark, Norway, Sweden or Finland, all are among the 10 happiest countries in the world. Taking inspiration from it could be a good idea, and the Daily Geek Show today offers you 5 Scandinavian philosophies that could bring you more joy in your life.
Hygge
Can be translated “by the comfort of the soul”, it is originally a Danish concept. Put simply, it's the feeling you get when you're in a relationship, making out, under the duvet on a very cold winter. It is therefore a pleasant feeling, and the philosophy is to allow yourself indulgences without any form of guilt… It is also recommended to do so without moderation during sad or dreary periods of your life.
In short, hygge represents moments of happiness that cannot be bought. According to the Danes, a few methods are effective for accessing it. Replace lights with candles, drink hot as much as possible, eat without thinking about your figure, try to disconnect from computers and laptops as much as possible, and dress… with big socks! Finally, adapt its interior decoration to immerse yourself in a pleasant and cozy environment.
Lagom
For the Swedes, the Lagom is a “feel good” philosophy. The aim is also to obtain a kind of balance in one's personal and professional life, with the objectives of simplicity and serenity.
Here are some tips that serve to adopt this philosophy. First, know how to be just good enough, that is, avoid perfectionism. Stop comparing yourself to others in all circumstances and seek to live by yourself.
Other advice to achieve this such as creating an interior space that encourages exchanges (do not put the sofa in front of the television for example but prefer armchairs around a coffee table); buy a good product instead of 3-4 entry-level products, eat better or even learn to reconnect with nature.
Info
Unlike the other two philosophies above which call for taking more time to complete one's tasks, the Sisu is quite different. Indeed, the goal is to relentlessly invest in your challenges until they are achieved.
More than just courage, this philosophy requires mental strength, perseverance and rigor. After realization, you will have the feeling that nothing is forbidden and impossible for you, and you will be able to tackle any type of challenge.
If you want to get that action-oriented mindset, you can always try taking an icy Finn-like bath first thing in the morning. But more seriously, the Finnish concept invites you to move as soon as the opportunity arises, for example go to work by bike or on foot, abandon public transport and the car as much as possible.
Also, don't let the climate decide your day for you, don't neglect nature during its walks, never give up on your dreams when you see the long journey ahead of you. As you will have understood, this philosophy pushes us out of our comfort zone.
Fika
Take “fika” breaks, even at work: already implemented in all Swedish companies, the concept is to take two breaks in your active day. The first at the end of the morning, and the second at the beginning of the afternoon.
It is particularly possible to do this while having coffee with colleagues, and all this allows you to clear your mind and think about something else. Pauses are good and should be used more in any activity.
Lykke
In Danish, it means “happiness”. This philosophy can be translated into 6 approaches, solidarity, money, health, freedom, trust and kindness.
Ultimately, these are simple concepts that already punctuate all of our lives. But we do not necessarily seek to optimize and centralize them on a daily basis. Here are some tips to achieve this:
Sharing and solidarity: food is considered by the Danes as a major element in our conquest of happiness. Sharing food nourishes our friendships, strengthens ties, allows us to be part of a community. Share meals as much as possible with friends, colleagues or family.
Turn your street/neighborhood into a community: It has been proven that in neighborhood communities, 98% of residents feel safe. The benefit is therefore incredible on your daily life, your social relations are also only more reinforced.
For health, choose the bike. Also, take long walks in the forest, especially as the Japanese like to do. Finally, don't forget to regularly ventilate the room where you are.
