PARIS (Reuters) - Nearly one in two French people have a negative opinion of the European Union and 64% want the EU to "refocus on certain countries", according to a Viavoice poll to be published in Liberation on Monday.
For 49% of those questioned, the European Union evokes "something negative" against 45% who think the opposite. Six percent don't know.
Sixty percent are nevertheless against leaving the European Union, 28% are in favour, 12% have no opinion.
The French are 58% to consider that Europe is an economic constraint for their country, against 32% who see it as an asset. Ten percent don't know.
However, 59% of them refuse to leave the euro (29% for, 12% don't know).
Fifty-two percent believe that the EU is "a political constraint, penalizing for France", while 32% support "a political openness to other countries beneficial to France". Eleven percent don't know.
Only 7% of respondents call for an enlargement of the EU, 21% advocate the status quo and 64% want it to refocus on certain countries (six founding countries or the euro zone). Eight percent don't know.
The survey was conducted online from April 11 to 16 with a sample of 1.011 people representative of the French population aged 18 and over.
