ANIMALS - 33 lions rescued from South American circuses arrived on Saturday evening April 30 in South Africa, where they will be released in a nature reserve.

The lions, which left Peru on Friday, arrived at Johannesburg airport where they appeared to be in good condition although slightly disturbed by this transatlantic mail, said Jan Creamer, the president of Animal Defenders International (ADI), on the spot. the NGO in charge of this vast operation called "Spirit of Freedom".

"They lived a real hell. They were beaten and starved... We bring them back to paradise, to their origin," she said. After more than 15 hours of flight, the lions were transported in two trucks to the South African sanctuary of Emoya (Emoya Big Cat Sanctuary), 5000 hectares of savannah closed to the public where they will receive care and food.

We hear the lions roar on this video filmed on their arrival:

"Over the next few months, their habitat will gradually expand as they get used to their new lives and get to know each other," Jan Creamer added. Of the 33 felines, 24 come from Peru and 9 from Colombia. Both countries passed laws banning the use of wild animals in circuses in 2011 and 2013 respectively.

If in Colombia the circus of Bucaramanga (north-east) handed over its lions voluntarily, in Peru, the NGO had to intervene in several circuses escorted by the police to enforce the law and snatch the animals from their painful captivity. . According to the ADI, this is the largest captive feline transport operation in history.

On Sunday, the NGO released the first images of the lions outside their cage. Here, Iron rubs shoulders with a tree, "for the first time in his life", says Animal Defenders International.

"I'm so grateful to finally have them here, a dream come true," said 19-year-old Savannah Heuser, who runs the sanctuary with her mother. "They had a long journey but they are surprisingly calm. Some of them were restless during the journey and they have a few minor injuries, but nothing serious," she added.
