Authorities monitoring traffic on UK roads can now rely on a powerful ally to identify offenders: satellites.
The American PIPS Technology has developed the “SpeedSpike” system which makes it possible to identify drivers with heavy feet.
Using two cameras, one located on Earth and the other mounted on a satellite, SpeedSpike catches drivers exceeding speed limits. This system relies on two fixed points to estimate the speed of a vehicle. Next, a photo of the offending vehicle's license plate is taken so authorities can trace its driver.
Those who have visited the UK before know that the sky is cloudy most of the time. However, the weather will not protect drivers: neither the darkness of the night nor the clouds will prevent SpeedSpike from detecting offenders. In addition, the system has the advantage of being inexpensive and very easy to install.
The PIPS Technology system will be tested in the London Borough of Southwark and along the A374 motorway in Cornwall between Torpoint and Anthony. If the trial phase is successful, SpeedSpike will be installed near schools, among other places.
It will catch hit-and-run drivers and act as an incentive to reduce driver speeds in school zones. However, many are worried that this country will be given an additional technological tool, because it is already known to act like a “Big Brother” due to the surveillance exercised over its population.
