The rumors were true: Microsoft was preparing well for the biggest wave of layoffs in its history. The previous one dated back to 2009 and took almost 6000 employees. This time, 18.000 jobs will be cut by next year! Satya Nadella just announced it in an email to the whole company.

The details are not yet known, Nadella promises to give them during the presentation of the next financial results, Tuesday July 22. For the moment, we just know that most of the layoffs (12.500) will affect the old division Nokia Devices and Services. Affected employees will be notified of their fate within the next six months.

The rest of the deletions will aim to deeply reorganize Microsoft to reduce the number of hierarchical levels in order to make the company more agile, able to react more quickly to the market. Satya Nadella thus responds to the most frequent criticisms against Microsoft, according to which it has become sclerotic by its validation and decision-making processes.

Finally Satya Nadella promises a strategic shift in the smartphone market. High-end models will focus on technological innovations (such as the Lumia 1020's Pureview sensor). In the low end, Nadella announces the transformation of certain models Nokia X in Lumia. A half admission of failure for this range halfway between two worlds.
